A jealous husband is in custody, facing a charge of murder, following an incident on Friday night in which his wife was allegedly strangled to death. According to the police, the husband suspected that his wife was having an affair after she received a call from another man.
Today, the body of Julia Mutendeleki (34) is lying in the mortuary and her husband, Ntshavheni Mudau (38), is behind bars. Shocked community members of Tswera village, north of Thohoyandou, looked on in disgust as police and undertakers took away the body of the deceased on Saturday evening. Ntshavheni is facing a murder charge and he briefly appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday. His case was postponed to January 3 for further hearing and bail application.
Neighbours disclosed to Mirror that the couple had a history of violence and they were always at each other’s throats before they were separated by a protection order, which was issued against the suspect last year. "As a result, the man walked out of the house and left his wife alone. He had been arrested earlier for violating the protection order after battering his wife mercilessly. It seems they settled the matter between themselves and it was the first night for the husband to come back home.
"Suddenly, everyone was shocked when the tragedy struck," said one of the neighbours, who preferred not to be named.
Mr Rendani Ligudu of the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) condemned the incident and warned community members not to resort to violence when solving their problems. "It is quite disturbing to learn that the incident happened on Saturday, a day before the final day of activism against the abuse of women and children. Violence has never been a solution to a problem, but what is needed is to seek professional assistance whenever a couple experiences problems."
