Body of missing 70-year-old man found in mountains

News - Date: 15 December 2006

The partly decomposed body of a man who went missing two weeks ago was discovered in the Tshifudi Mountain on Monday. Shonisani Elias Maluta (70) disappeared without trace on Saturday, December 2.

He had been staying alone at Tshifudi-Matei for the past 30 years. A missing person’s file was registered at the Tshaulu SAPS before the discovery of the body.

A visit by Mirror saw confused community members conducting a search on the banks of the Luvuvhu River on Sunday afternoon. "We haven’t eaten anything since this morning and we will never rest until we find him, dead or alive," said the missing man’s younger brother, Reckson Maluta. He added that the family was surprised because his brother did not have a history of vanishing without telling them where he was going. "He just vanished without telling anyone where he was going. We later received information that he never came back home and we started searching for him everywhere, thinking that we would locate him, but our efforts proved fruitless. We even visited some relatives to find out if he was there, but he was nowhere to be found. We then reported the matter to the police. We are shattered by the sad discovery and his death has brought pain for us."

Community members and members of the SAPS conducted a search at the local mountain and bushes but they could not locate the missing man on Sunday. Local Civic Association Chairperson Peter Ramashia said: "The search continued on Monday morning and we found the deceased on the local mountain at about 10:00. He was lying on his back and his body was partly decomposed. This is really a shock because we did not expect it."

Mirror also learnt that the deceased was due to appear in the Tshaulu Periodical Court for a case of assault, after a brawl with his next-door neighbour. The cause of Shonisani’s death was not clear at the time of going to press, as police were still busy investigating.
