Several readers reacted during the past week on the Louis Trichardt-Makhado name controversy.
In his reaction, Tshifhiwa from [email protected] has had the following to say:
I found the ruling disgusting and a legal precendent shame. Vhembe region is a Vhavenda area and all the names in this region shall be named after our ancestors. Makhado is a hero of the Vhavenda people and Louis Trichadt only came to the place after his death. As expected, the DA and other racist organisations were always going to object. The Indians should stay out of this - in fact they make all their livelihoods thanks to the Vhavenda people´s buying power.
To the few Shangaans: It is really a shame, but not surprising, as history tells us that they partnered with the Boers to defeat Makhado´s son. What do they have to show for? History is repeationg itself. Fine, we will consult and the name will be changed to MAKHADO, once and for all.
Mashudu Makhado from [email protected] stated that:
"Unfortunately the CA´s group perceived victory is short-lived, they are the ones that are costing taxpayers millions. Their case against the name change harbours around racism and refusal to change with times. It is a known fact that this is a Vhavenda area and everybody else will have to do as they please as majority rules. The court´s verdict has nothing to do with the name. Procedures will be followed this time around and the majority of people in Makhado will vote for the name and all this nonsense will finally come to an end."
Mpete Benson from [email protected] said:
It is very sad to learn that even some members of the minority group being represented by this name change, including Mr Timothy Maanda, is commending the racist Louis Trichardt thing. Mr Maanda should know that we "Vha Venda" people are not going to stand for his behaviour. He is a shame to us, mybe he should have his name changed to reflect his DA leadership. The name change is not about DA or ANC, it is about the national process to redress the imbalances of the past and we do not need anyone holding us back. Mr. Maanda should know that I personally do not like what he is doing, its a shame to us, we don’t want to be like Zimbabwe.
Ms Jana Smith should not be concerned with the municipality wasting money in this process it is our money as well since we are tax payers. The municipality is still going for a wider consultation and I assure you that the name will be changed, maybe not to Makhado, but to something else which, will not be Afrikaans or English, it will come from the very same minority groups.
