Tshedza Ravhura is now officially the Vhamusanda

The Makonde royal family is set to hand over the official certificate confirming the traditional leadership structures to Vhamusanda Vho Tshedza Ravhura at the Makonde Royal Palace on Friday (18th).

Vhamusanda Vho Ravhura was inaugurated as the traditional leader of the village in October 2014 by Vho Thovhele Midiyavhathu Kennedy Tshivhase. However, since he was still a minor at the time, the royal family appointed Mr Edward Ravhura to serve as regent.

The situation took a dramatic turn when a rival group, opposing the Makonde royal family's decision, appointed their own regent in the village. This move led to an uproar among community members, some of whom were against the decision. The unrest culminated in the burning of several businesses in the village in February 2023.

In response, the Makonde royal family engaged with all stakeholders and requested that Vhamusanda Vho Tshedza Ravhura be officially recognised as the traditional leader. Former Limpopo Premier Mr Chupu Stanley Mathabatha issued the certificate of recognition on 28 May this year.

According to Mr Fhatuwani Ravhura, spokesperson for the Makonde royal palace, the notification was published in the Government Gazette on 28 May 2024, and no objections were raised against the issuance of the certificate by the premier.

"I want to make it categorically clear that we are not going to inaugurate our traditional leader on Friday, as he was already inaugurated in 2014 by Thovhele Midiyavhathu Kennedy Tshivhase. We are going to celebrate the fact that he has been given his recognition certificate as the traditional leader of Makonde village," said Mr Ravhura.
