Reformed Churches gather in Louis Trichardt

News - Date: 09 May 2008

The Reformed Churches of Classis Limpopo gathered at the venue of the Reformed Church of Louis Trichardt on Tuesday. A special feature of this gathering was the fact that theological student Peter Ndou from Mutale was examined and declared fit for calling in the Reformed Churches.

It is a great gift from God to his church to have another preacher able to preach the Word in Venda, especially at this time of commemorating Pentecost. A classis refers to the gathering of neighbouring churches, and is a word that derives from Reformed church government.

It had been reported in September 2007 already that Classis Capricorn (predominantly Venda-speaking churches) and Classis Soutpansberg (Afrikaans-speaking churches) had merged, forming the new Classis Limpopo. History was made at the second session with the election of both Venda-speaking and Afrikaans-speaking believers on the moderamen of the meeting.

The chairman was Rev Cornel Nagel of Musina and the deputy chairman Rev Norman Ligege of De Hoop. The minutes were handled by Rev Jaco Putter of Potgietersrus (Mokopane) and Dr Edmund de Beer of Laeveld (Tzaneen). The sisters of the Reformed Church Louis Trichardt served refreshments and lunch and thus assisted the concentration of the 36 brethren. According to observers, Classis Limpopo is real proof of the attitude of faith in which Christian believers of various nationalities wish to assist one another in matters pertaining to the church without ignoring their God-given national and linguistic identities. "Our prayer is that the Lord Jesus Christ will continue to bless this cooperation to the benefit of His reign over all peoples and tongues," an observer said.
