The National Heritage Council (NHC) of South Africa honored the six warrior kings of Limpopo at an event that was held at the Musina Municipal premises last Wednesday.
According to the chief executive officer of the NHC, Adv Sonwabile Mancotywa, the heritage council, in partnership with the Limpopo government, erected the Ubuntu Monument as a way of showing appreciation for the heritage contribution made by the six kings of Limpopo.
“The six kings expressed the spirit and values of Ubuntu. They have distinguished themselves as an embodiment and champions of the values and principles of humanity, in a manner consistent with Ubuntu,” he said.
He added that it was high time that the people started to revive the African values of Ubuntu to assist in nation building and also creating a South African identity and social cohesion.
The kings who were honored are Makgoba, Makhado, Maleboho, Nghungunyane, Mokopane and Sekhukhune. Erected on the municipal premises of the Musina Municipality, the Ubuntu Monument, which is built of stones, has all the names of the warrier kings inscribed on it.
The monument was unveiled by the Premier of Limpopo, Mr Sello Moloto, in the company of six Kings from different tribes of Limpopo, Khosikhulu Vho Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, Hosi Eric Xumalo Ngungunyane, Kgoshi Malebobo, Kgoshi Sekhukhune, Kgoshi Mokopane and Kgoshi Makgoba.
In his address during the unveiling, the Premier of Limpopo, Mr Sello Moloto, said that heritage month served to remind the people of the importance of the past as well as the present.
The chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders in Limpopo, Kgoshi Sefogole Makgeru, said he appreciated the good work which the NHC and the Limpopo provincial government had done in honoring and recognizing the six warrier kings.
According to Makgeru, the monument will help the young generation to understand the values and customs of the history and the different cultures of Limpopo.
