The Vhembe District Department of Education outclassed the four districts of Limpopo in the matric results, with an average of 62%, followed by Capricorn District with 61.3% and Waterberg with 53.4%.
This was said by the MEC for Education in Limpopo, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, during the announcement of the results at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane last Tuesday.
Motsoaledi said that 2008 was a watershed year in the history of South Africa. “For the very first time in the history of South Africa, all grade 12 learners in our public schools wrote the same examination, regardless of colour, creed, class or what corner of the country they emerged from,” he said.
According to Motsoaledi, 84 614 learners wrote matric in Limpopo and only 45 958 passed, giving a percentage of 54.3%. Pietersburg scooped the top circuit per district category with an average of 86.5%, followed by Mvudi in Vhembe with 79.1% and Manombe in Mopani with 64.2%.
Mbilwi Secondary was nominated the overall best performing school in the province, followed by Harry Oppenheimer and Thengwe Secondary, also from Vhembe.
Mbilwi Secondary’s Mulalo Nemataheni was nominated the top learner in Vhembe at a top learner per district category and while Henri Boshoff (Louis Trichardt Secondary), Raeesah Hassim (Louis Trichardt Secondary), Ntendeni Luvhengo (Mbilwi Secondary), Christili Muller (Louis Trichardt Secondary), Tsepo Serakalala (Louis Trichardt Secondary) and Thendo Tshivhase (Mphaphuli Secondary School) were honoured for being amongst the 30 best performing learners in the province category.
Asked the secret behind the good work, the senior manager of education in Vhembe, Dr Nthambeleni Rambiyana, said that it was through the dedication of circuit managers, teachers, learners and all departmental staff members that they scooped the best district award. “The involvement of all stakeholders, which included parents, SGB members and traditional leaders, also contributed to the good performance,” he said.
