Four of the prestigious awards that were conferred by the President of the ANC, Mr Jacob Zuma, during the launch of the ANC 2009 election manifesto in East London, were received by structures from Limpopo. That is why the Limpopo ANC provincial executive committee (PEC) held a dinner in honour of those three structures at Meropa Casino in Polokwane last Thursday.
Out of 284 municipalities countrywide, including six big metros, the Musina Local Municipality was awarded the ZK Matthews Award for being the best performing ANC-led municipality. The Sol Plaatje Award, conferred on the best performing ANC branch, went to the Morogoro Branch and the Charlotte Maxeke Award, conferred on the best performing ANC Women´s League branch, went to the Sihlangu Makhubela Branch.
Limpopo ANC Provincial Chairperson Cassel Mathale said they were overwhelmed and proud of the award because what they had achieved was history in the making. “We are delighted because this has never happened before. Scooping three out of four awards indicates that we have a lot of potential in Limpopo and this makes the ANC proud. We are going to consolidate what we have and work hard to bring a better life to all.”
Mathale said he was not surprised when the ZK Matthews Award was conferred on the Musina Municipality. “The provincial executive committee (PEC) interacted with all municipalities in Limpopo and we found that Musina was doing well in all five key performance areas, which include service delivery and infrastructure development, local economic development and other job creation initiatives, municipal financial viability, municipal transformation and institutional development and good governance. We hope other municipalities will emulate Musina.”
Musina Mayor Caroline Mahasela said: “We are always prepared to share the secrets of our success with other municipalities to accelerate service delivery. We are very happy to note that there are people who are watching our progress out there. This will encourage us to put in more effort and we will continue to be counted among the best in the country.”
She added: “Musina Municipality would like to commend our highly competitive ANC government for coming up with interventions aimed at improving access to the delivery of public services. It is envisaged that the initiatives are, amongst other things, assisting in the removal of service delivery deadlocks and strengthening contact between government and the people. That is one of the cornerstones for excellence in the Musina Local Municipality. We would also like to thank all stakeholders, including the ANC leadership, for giving us the necessary support.”
