The Vhembe District Municipality, in collaboration with the Department of Education in Vhembe, honored its top achievers in education at a ceremony at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds last Friday.
Teachers and learners were awarded trophies, certificates and cash prizes in recognition of their outstanding performance and hard work shown in 2009.
Mbilwi High School was nominated as the best school in the district. History was made when Soutpansberg North was rewarded as the best circuit in the district, followed by Sambandou and Soutpansberg West.
The executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Falaza Mdaka, said that the district municipality and education department in Vhembe felt it was essential to celebrate joint efforts in teaching. He pledged to increase the bursaries supplied by his district municipality to R2 million in the 2011 academic year. He said his municipality would always give support to education and that it encouraged learners to study hard, so that they could be given bursaries.
Naomi Mmbi of Thengwe high school, who scooped position one in the district, received a trophy, R10 000 and a laptop computer, while Rotondwa Nengovhela of Mbilwi, who finished in second place, received R6 000, a trophy and a laptop computer. The third-placed Elana Mostert of Eric Louw received R4 000, a trophy and a laptop computer.
Mmbi also received an additional R20 000 from Cllr Mdaka, for being the best learner in the district.
Top learners per subject, Thivha Ludere, Naomi Mmbi, Zwanga Ratombo, Ajith Punnen, Phuluso Munyai, Matthys Beukes, Vhulenda Mudau, Rofhiwa Mudau, and Tshedza Ravhutsi were awarded a cash prize of R5000 each in recognition of their good work.
The most improved schools, Mudinane, Shimange and Tshikundamalema, were also acknowledged during the event.
