Infant killed in love tiff

A 17-year-old girl is cursing the day she met the man who allegedly turned out to be a beast...

Prudence Molokwane of Ndengeza Block A outside Giyani told Mirror that she fell in love early last year and for that, she and her granny, Ndaheni Maluleke, are nursing injuries to the head, after the man allegedly assaulted the two with an iron rod. After the assault, the man allegedly took the baby. The body of the infant was later found in the neighbouring Mavodze mountain.

The incident has allegedly shaken the normally peaceful community to its foundation.

In an interview with Mirror on Monday, Prudence spoke out for the first time about the incident. She says she met the man last year and they fell in love. “I later discovered that he was a jailbird and had been release on parole,” she said.

She said she didn´t want to continue with the relationship, but he was not prepared to break up with her. “I later went to Johannesburg where I worked and fell in love with someone else, and I became pregnant with his child. I came back while I was pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy six months ago,” she said. The boy was named Matimu, Xitsonga for "history".

According to W/O Thomas Makhubele, spokesperson of the Giyani police, the girl was asleep in the early hours of Monday last week, when a man came knocking at the door of her house. The suspect then reportedly assaulted the girl and her granny with an iron rod. Realizing that he meant to harm them, the two women run away, leaving the baby on his own.

The man then allegedly left with the child. Makhubele said police received information about the whereabouts of the man on Friday (17th) and they rushed to Babangu Village, also in Giyani. “After a tip-off from the community, we rushed to the village where we arrested the suspect. After some interrogation, he confessed that he had left the baby at a nearby mountain and we immediately launched a search for the missing baby,” he said.

Makhubele said they combed the mountain the whole of Saturday and later found the baby. It is alleged that the little boy had been strangled to death. “We have initially opened cases of assault and kidnapping, but the charges will now change to murder as we have found him dead.

Prince Mashimbye appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing one count of murder and two counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He is in custody.
