New mall to open soon

News - Date: 29 April 2011

For shoppers from around Thulamela and neighbouring towns, travelling long distances to do shopping will soon be history. The new Game Centre Development in Thohoyandou opens its doors towards the end of August.

The good news emerged during a visit by Mayor Makumbane, who was shown the progress of the construction. The developers, Moolman Group, took the mayor and his entourage around the mall. It is situated along the busy Thohoyandou main street and next to theThohoyandou police station. Construction started in October last year.

The construction of the mall has brought a lot of buzz and excitement amongst the locals. Predictions are that it will create new investment and competition in the local retail sector. The mall, costing more than R41million, has created a lot of opportunities for locals in terms of employment.

According to Ms Mpho Madadzhe, the project community liaison officer, they have created more than 180 employment opportunities, mostly from the local communities. She said they were on target, even though they were slightly disturbed by the rains. “We will meet our deadline of June 24 and we are hopeful that the doors will be opened for business on August 25,” she said.

She said the mall would house most of the known names in retail business, but their draw-card was Game, which would be the anchor shop of the mall.

An elated Makumbane said the mall would help alleviate the congestion at shops. "We are very excited as the new mall will supplement the existing infrastructure we have around here. It will help us a lot as most of the things we had to go and buy at far away places will be available here,” he said.

“Many of our previously unemployed are now working and they are making meaningful changes in their lives and those of their families. This is what we want as government, namely private companies providing employment for our people,” he said.

He said the close proximity to institutions like the University of Venda and the Khoroni Hotel would make it a prime business area with great potential.

“The prime location of the mall is a classic example of a location being good for business. It is within easy reach for all as it is right next to a busy main street here in our town. We hope the developers will not regret the step they have taken and we encourage others to come on board and bring more development to our area,” he said.
