Vukona - a shining literary star

The star of the 18-year-old poet, Vukona Promise Maluleke, is shining ever brighter as she stands and recites her poetry with confidence. She has established herself as one of the best and most-sought-after poets in Vhembe.

Vukona, who authored a collection of poems in Xitsonga, titled Nyenya Yo Vindzuka, started writing poems in 2019. She found encouragement and inspiration from reading a book titled Mihloti ya Tingana by TP Magaisa.

Mihloti ya Tingana is a book which speaks to me directly, and I loved the way the author uses words to reach the readers’ minds,” she said. “Now I have written my own book of poems. My poems are so touching, and they are for teenagers and the upcoming authors.”

Vukona said that she would be elated if readers provided more feedback regarding the book. She also challenges young people not to give up in life because they are the country’s future leaders. “Even though I hardly had any support when I started writing, I told myself that nothing was going to stop me from writing and finding myself as a published poet in the near future.”

“In life, don’t give up and never allow people to look down on you,” she said. “Stand up and claim your place in society.”

Vukona is doing Grade 11 at Hanyani Nkuzana High School and she always encourages other pupils to study harder to have a brighter future.

She resides at Nkuzana village along the R578 road. Those who need copies of Nyenya Yo Vindzuka can call Vukona on Tel 068 151 4910.
