A new kid on the block is invading the local gospel music industry with a mighty sound. Even though he has just released his debut album, Ishmael Masimbane of Thononda in the Nzhelele area has already been classified as one of the top gospel music stars locally.

The album, titled U ri funze u rabela (teach us to pray), is a mixture of traditional and contemporary gospel music that the artist believes will automatically connect Christians with their Creator.

A staunch member of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC), Masimbane’s musical talent was recognised at an early age. He explains his musical journey: “I started singing in a church choir while I was still a little boy. I carried on singing while entertaining my peers at Thononda Primary School. Both teachers and fellow learners enjoyed my voice, while I led the morning devotions at Nndweleni High School, where I matriculated,” he says.

Early in his life, Masimbane realised that he needed to use his musical talent to spread the word of God. “I then joined the local Bless Them All Choir, where I gained more experience on stage performance and voice control. At the end of last year, I teamed up with the Apostle Ladies and recorded my debut album, which has been received well in the market. The album was launched at my home village of Thononda on 24 December last year. And the rest is now part of history,” he explains.

Masimbane added that his album comprised ten songs that were already making waves in the gospel music fraternity. On the album, Masimbane has worked with and featured seasoned gospel musicians such as Mashudu Ramadwa, Tshilidzi Rametsi and Apostle Tshidavhu.
