Reggae musician Majasi calls on people to pray

"Vulani Mato Hu Kho Lwiwa," which is reggae artist Khuthadzo Innocent Tshirundu's latest single, is fast making waves on the local reggae scene. Released in March, the title track, which loosely translates to "Open your Eyes, People are Fighting," is already hugely popular and receiving rave reviews.

The artist, popularly known as Majasi, a name he received because of a coat given to him by the father of reggae legend Khakhathi Tshisikule, says the song was inspired by the hatred people show these days.

“People are very bitter, and one would not even know why they are like this. It is now the ‘in’ thing to find people hating you without any justifiable reason. People will also mobilise others against you for no apparent reason. This song calls for all to be steadfast and pray all the time. Prayer is the only weapon we can use to keep ourselves safe from these forces of darkness,” he said.

Majasi, born in Mbaleni, grew up listening to Tshivenda reggae legends such as Colbert Mukwevho, Shufflers Ragimana, and Khakhathi Tshisikule. “I was very close to my mentor, the legendary reggae musician Khakhathi Tshisikule. I would accompany him to shows, and sooner than later, he realised my talent. It was in 2008 that he produced my first album ‘Ndo Bebwa Henefha.’ I have released two more albums - ‘Tshelede’ in 2020 and another one, ‘Vhutshilo Ndi Nndwa’ in 2022.”

In the latest single, he worked with seasoned lead guitarist Ntendeni Nephawe, versatile musicians Rofhiwa Nethwadzi, Gunhill, Munakisi Sadiki, Rofhiwa Tshifhumulo, and Pn Boy, among others.

“I am very grateful for the support I have been getting from my fans. An album is in the offing and will be out in September,” he said.
