The much-anticipated novel The Family Matriarch by well-known author Rudzani Khashane was officially launched during an event held at the Riverfront Hotel in Sandton on Saturday, 5 October.
The launch attracted readers, literary enthusiasts, and fellow authors who gathered to celebrate the release of her latest work. Guests included Tami Leotlela, author of The Daughter I Never Had; Ronell Davis from Novus Printers; a book influencer on TikTok named Logan; and Lorraine Sithole, co-founder of the Gauteng International Book Festival, who also facilitated the session.
Shayandima-born Khashane's debut work, Thicker Than Water, was a resounding success. According to the author, The Family Matriarch is a narrative centred around two women: Paige Mahone, a dedicated journalist, and Enelo Mathebula, the wife of prominent businessman and politician Eric Mathebula.
“Their paths cross when tragedy strikes. Enelo stabs her husband 24 times, resulting in his untimely death, setting off a series of events that challenges both women. As they deal with their individual struggles, the novel explores how their relationship evolves, leading to an unexpected friendship,” said Khashane.
At the launch, Khashane provided insight into the inspiration behind the book, emphasising her interest in strong female characters. She shared how the novel examines how women, even in the midst of personal turmoil, can find strength in connection and friendship.
“I wanted to write a story that captures the resilience of women and how they navigate complex emotions and circumstances,” Khashane said.
During the event, Khashane read an excerpt from the novel, focusing on the pivotal moment when Paige and Enelo meet. She also explained the significance of the novel’s title, The Family Matriarch, highlighting how it reflects both Enelo’s role within her family and the larger theme of female empowerment.
“I know readers are looking forward to what I will bring next in my growing literary career, and I will not disappoint,” Khashane concluded.
