Tshivenda music lovers are in for a festive treat this Christmas. This follows the unveiling of the renowned Adziambei Band’s 20th project, Matshonise.
The much-anticipated album was made possible through a R25,000 contribution from the South African Music Rights Organisation’s Music Creation Fund (SMCF). It was officially released on Wednesday, 23 October.
The nine-track album features songs such as the title track Matshonise, Funanani, and Mazhakandila. It was recorded at Burning Shak Studio and mastered by the man himself, Mulalo Mukwevho.
This project also marks the introduction of a new band member, Phumudzo “Muvenda P” Mavhungu, who brings fresh energy and a keen interest in learning Tshivenda traditional music.
The new album continues the band’s journey and tradition of producing music strictly in the Tshivenda language. Band founder Maele Sirwali said they were overwhelmed by the support they had received from SMCF.
“The SMCF’s support enabled us to create music that preserves our cultural heritage. Matshonise tackles the harsh realities faced by women married to individuals struggling with alcoholism and debt. As a band, we are proud to continue promoting our language and culture through music,” he said.
He further thanked the fans who have supported them over the years and helped build them into the brand they are today. “The support we are receiving is overwhelming. We urge our loyal supporters and the Vhavenda community at large to join us in celebrating this milestone by streaming and downloading Matshonise on online platforms. Although a limited number of CDs will be available for purchase, we encourage fans to embrace digital music consumption, ensuring our music reaches a wider audience,” said Sirwali.
