Police intercept large drug shipment at border

The police in Limpopo have confirmed that they have confiscated heroine valued at more than R2 million at the Beit Bridge border post on Wednesday, 23 August.

Three Zimbabwean nationals, aged 32, 36 and 41, were placed under arrest in connection with the heroine that weighed 10,25kg.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the three suspects were travelling in a truck and were directed through the cargo scanner as part of a routine check by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) at the border post. The suspects were crossing the border from Zimbabwe into South Africa.

The scanner revealed a black bag hidden under the bed compartment of the truck. A field test confirmed that the drugs were heroine.

All three suspects were placed under arrest and will appear in the Messina Magistrate’s Court later this week, where they will face charges relating to the illegal possession of and dealing in drugs.
