The four football teams in Dzwerani and surrounding villages will compete in the one-day MOP Soccer Tournament, which will be held at the Dzwerani-Ha-Madala sports grounds next Saturday, 17 August.
The tournament is the brainchild of Mr Mulalo Madzivhandila, the new managing director of the MOP Group, a Thohoyandou-based company that manufactures sliding doors and does events management.
Madzivhandila said he was born and raised in Dzwerani and he decided to plough back into his village, empowering young people through the playing of soccer.
During the launch at the Vhafamadi Bed and Breakfast on Sunday evening, Madzivhandila said the teams to play in the tournament were Dzwerani United Brothers, Manamani City, Mahematshena Young Stars and Mvelaphanda FC.
He said the tournament was the first of its kind, and he hoped it would become an annual event during August every year.
The winner of the tournament will get R4 000, a trophy, soccer kit and two balls. The team that will be defeated in the final will receive R3 000 and a soccer kit, while the other two teams will receive R2 000 each.
“We will also be taking young people from abusing drugs and alcohol as they will be kept busy. When young people are kept busy, less crime will be reported in the communities,” added Madzivhandila.
Madzivhandila further said that, during the tournament, some artists would entertain the people who attended.
