Young Phethani brings back silver from SA's

A Grade 11 learner from Vhulaudzi High School in Tshitavha returned with a silver medal from the SA High Schools Track and Field Championships held in the Western Cape earlier this month.

Despite facing challenges, Phethani Mabala (19) finished second in the 3,000-metre steeplechase, displaying immense determination and skill. Unfortunately, she was unable to finish the 5,000-metre event because of an injury sustained during the competition.

The championships, which took place from 3 to 6 April at the Dal Josaphat Athletics Stadium in Paarl, showcased the best of the country’s young talent. Phethani’s achievements were celebrated at an event held at the school on April 19.

Phethani's journey to the SA championships began with her winning the district championships at Louis Trichardt High School. She then went on to qualify for the national tournament at the provincial track and field championships held on March 8 at the Oscar Mphetha Stadium in Polokwane.

Phethani spends much of her time focusing on her schoolwork. “When I am not at school, I spend most of my time training. I believe that sports will help me prepare for my future,” she added.

She said that the provincial and national competitions were tough but to be counted among the best in the country was a great honour. “I never thought a rural girl like me would one day go places through athletics,” she said.

Phetani thanked all the people who have motivated her throughout her athletics career. “Most people have supported me morally and encouraged me to work hard. I don’t think I would have made it alone,” she said.
