For Sigebe, laughing comes naturally

“Your poor financial background and where you come from should never define your future and goals. Look at me; I come from a deep rural dusty village, but that did not deter the goals that I have set out for myself in life.”

These are words of wisdom from a young comedian, Emmanuel Sigebe (22) from Domboni la Dambale in the Niani area. Famously known as Calvor Ramiswaswo, Segebe’s talent unfolded while he was still at Mukununde Primary School. “Everything I said left my fellow learners and teachers in stitches. To me, it was a simple conversation, but people would laugh at everything that came from my mouth. I was still very young then and I did not take it seriously.”

He said when he went to further his education at Hanyani Secondary, he was automatically featured in school activities to entertain learners and teachers whenever functions were presented. “As time went by, I also received invitations to crack jokes in community and social gatherings such as birthday parties and weddings. That was where I realised that people love what I do, and I should take it to another level.”

Sigebe said he followed closely the activities of local comedians such as Vhakoma and Mr Bundu, who became the source of his inspiration. However, the current lockdown restrictions have now changed his mode of operation. “I used to perform before large crowds of people, but the restrictions on gatherings forced me to think smart. I now develop jokes and record short videos that I distribute on YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp under my stage name of Calvor Ramiswaswo. This is working for me because I have more than 5 000 fans who follow my comedies on social media. If I take just a day without posting a joke, I get a huge volume of callers who persuade me to drop something for that day.”

Because of his unique way of entertaining people, Sigebe received invites to work with music artists such as 30 Mrepa and Jah Rubza Vhadau on their musical videos. “When you are unique, you enjoy your terrain because you are not imitating anyone else. I urge those who want to join us in this industry to be unique because people want something new out there. My future dream is to establish a professional studio where I would record my comedies and sell them to television stations.”
