Things are looking up for Musina FM's Lerato

Young Lerato Mamatlodi is fast becoming one of the darlings of the local airwaves. At the age of 27, she is counted among Musina FM’s best presenters, with a huge following behind her. Lerato presents the Afternoon Drive Show, broadcast on weekdays from 15:00 to 18:00. 

For those who have known her since childhood, her success on the airwaves does not come as a surprise at all as she had already demonstrated her entertainment abilities back when she was still in Bonwa Udi Primary School. “I used to perform in school dramas and participated in debates in those early years. My teachers and fellow pupils were always impressed with my performances. When I went to Musina High School for my secondary education, I continued to take the lead in debates and unprepared speeches. My friends kept on telling me that they saw a bright future for me in the entertainment industry,” she said.

Lerato is a graduate in electrical engineering and DJs at local pubs in her spare time. She joined Musina FM in 2017. “After completing my Grade 12 in 2013, I enrolled for an electrical engineering course, which I completed in 2017. When I heard that Musina FM was looking for presenters, I applied and fortunately, they called me for an interview. I passed with flying colours and the rest, as they say, is history. I am happy for my electrical engineering qualification because it will serve as a backup, should my radio career take a knock, for whatever reason.”

To be a successful presenter, she says, one has to do a lot of research and keep up with what is currently happening around. “My programme has a huge following, and I have to see to it that people get the latest updates on matters that affect them. I mostly deal with entertainment updates, breaking news, sports updates, and I also interview musicians who are currently trending in the industry. It is my job to make sure that the information I present is fresh and relevant to all the different age groups who listen to my programme.”

Because of her hard work and dedication, she has also been made finance and administration manager of the radio station.
