Legendary musician and cleric Bishop Roxley Masevhe is not only adept at composing great music; he also appears to be a talented writer. He has authored his own autobiography titled “Against All Odds, From Grass to Grace,” which was officially launched at the Balmy Resort in Dzwerani on 25 September. The book launch coincided with his 64th birthday celebration.

With 45 albums and 400 recorded songs released over 46 years, Masevhe is regarded as one of the country’s great musicians. His timeless hits include songs such as “Munwe Munwe U do Fhira” and “Vhuya Lufuno Lwa Kale,” among others. However, despite his successful music career, not much is known about the man behind the music. The book offers a glimpse into the life of Roxley Fhatuwani Masevhe, from his youth and upbringing to his adult life. It provides a reflection on the ordinary life he led before becoming the iconic figure he is today.

The multiple award-winning songwriter, engineer, and producer, whose outstanding work earned him an honorary doctorate in arts from Unisa in 2016, has come a long way from his humble beginnings.

“I have travelled this long journey, which has not always been smooth sailing. I have encountered many obstacles in my life, but I chose not to give up. The book is about my personal experiences, the ups and downs, the good, the bad, and the ugly of my life journey. It might inspire some, as it illustrates how I rose from nothing to grace, from zero to hero, from nobody to somebody, from obscurity to the limelight, from poverty to living a good life, and from village life to city life. Everything I am comes from perseverance. This book is a treasury of life lessons for those who want to learn how to free their minds from self-pity, face their demons, and overcome their obstacles,” he said.

Masevhe mentored many prominent artists during his career, including Rofhiwa Manyaga and the late renowned engineer Mr Emmanuel Mamphogoro, among others. He is set to release two more books in November of this year.
