Fhulufhelo supports her family with her bead crafting skills

Ms. Fhulufhelo Thabo, who resides in Phadzima, supports her children by crafting traditional items with beads. “In my work, I create necklaces, keyholders, and bracelets made from beads. Some of the beadwork is done in colours that tourists love,” she says.

Aside from individual clients, her customers include Venda, Pedi, and Tsonga traditional dancers, who frequent her small business to purchase her products.

“I didn't sit and wait for my husband to provide for me. I decided to utilise my talent to craft bead products and a variety of other items,” she said. She aims to revive traditional ethics and norms among the younger generation as they appear to have shifted towards modern lifestyles.

“I also encourage young girls and women to attend sewing workshops to develop their talents, so they can support themselves during tough times,” she said. “People complain about the lack of jobs, but they're the ones who can create opportunities for themselves. Why endure hardships when you have capable hands and legs? We need to take action to improve our own lives,” she added.

“I encounter different customers in various places daily, and this motivates me to work hard to meet their needs.”

She concluded by urging community members to preserve their cultural attire for the benefit of future generations. “I encourage people to wear them to showcase their true identity. We should not be ashamed to embrace what is ours because no other nation will promote our culture. Those who still claim there are no jobs need to reconsider because they have the potential to become their own bosses. Success is built on a positive attitude and hard work.”

Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality.
