Woman accused of hacking ex to death with panga

News in brief - Date: 03 June 2022

A Zimbabwean citizen known as Never was allegedly hacked to death with a panga by his former girlfriend after a quarrel. The incident took place last Friday (27 May) at Makhitha village.

The spokesperson for the police, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, said the man had died at the scene of the incident. According to him, the suspect had just broken up with the deceased, who was allegedly refusing to admit that the girl no longer wanted him in her life. The man allegedly visited his former girlfriend on several occasions, threatening to kill her.

Mojapelo said that when he visited her again on Friday, they started arguing. “According to our preliminary investigations, the suspect allegedly stabbed him many times all over his body with a sharp object,” said Mojapelo.

The suspect, Ms Nthatheni Malitsha (40), appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder on Monday, 30 May. The case was postponed to 3 June for a bail application. She remained in custody.

The chairperson of the Real Men Foundation, Mr Itani Nenguda, said that people should rather report incidents of abuse to the police and not revert to violence and such attacks. Couples who might be experiencing marital or relationship problems are advised to consult a therapist or social worker for counselling, rather than resorting to killing each other.

According to a community member, who asked to remain anonymous, the couple had a history of quarrelling. The residents were awakened by loud screams and cries that came from the scene, and they left their homes to find out what was wrong. When arriving at the scene, they found Never lying dead in a pool of blood.
