Limpopo’s matric class of 2023 scored a pass rate of almost 80%, propelling the province to the overall seventh place, a significant improvement from its last position a year ago.

“Limpopo has improved its pass rate by 7%, from 72.1% in 2022 to 79.5% in 2023. We are not only celebrating the increase in percentage, but it is with great pleasure to note that Limpopo has moved from the bottom of the province rankings to number seven nationally. This significant progress is a testament to the collective efforts of our learners, teachers, parents, and the entire education community,” said the MEC for Education, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, when officially announcing the results of the Grade 12 Class of 2023 at The Ranch Hotel, outside Polokwane, on Friday, 19 January.

The event was attended by the leader of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), Bishop Dr Barnabas Lekganyane, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Pinky Kekana, MECs, mayors, different politicians from other organisations, teachers, and the top achievers.

Mbilwi Secondary School was once again named the best-performing public ordinary school in Limpopo. Lerule-Ramakhanya said the school had made history in 2007 by becoming the first black school outside the former Model C school system to be admitted into the Elite Club 100 for schools that produce a 100% pass rate in mathematics.

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha praised Ramakhanya and her entire team for their efforts in steering the ship in the right direction. “The government’s substantial investment in education is bearing fruit, as is evident in the over 150 infrastructure projects initiated and completed over the past five years. These projects, including the establishment of new facilities and the eradication of pit latrines, exemplify our dedication to fostering a conducive learning environment,” he said. Mathabatha added that he had no doubt that the Class of 2024 would continue to build on this success and eventually achieve an 80% pass rate.
