Sports day at Tshitale provides much more than just fitter bodies

The soccer and netball tournament organised by the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for the rural communities at Mulima in the Tshitale area proved to be a huge success, with both young and old participating in the different events.

According to the director of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in Vhembe, Mr Collins “Thagalu” Thovhakale, sports provide a positive outlet for communities. “Good sportsmanship provides guidelines that can be generalised to the classroom and lifelong achievement. It also teaches children to function in a competitive society. Through sports, people learn important values, such as discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, sacrifice, and accountability. It is up to the municipality, parents, teachers, sports teams, and schools to help mould, develop, and instil these qualities into the lives of young people.”

He said that the department was very proud to host the event, which took place this past Saturday (10th). “The importance of sport in the lives of young people goes much further than the basic answer that it keeps kids off the streets. It does, in fact, keep young people off the streets, but it also instils lessons that are essential in the life of a human being,” he said.

The U/17 girls’ netball category was won by the Mulima Nairobi Netball Club, while Thothololo FC emerged as champions in the U/17 boys' soccer category.

The Donkerhoek Ladies team were crowned winners in the Women’s Masters soccer category, while Mulima/Nthabalala FC won the Men’s Masters soccer category.

All the winning teams collected trophies, gold medals, and kits.
