THOHOYANDOU – The SAA Supa 8 KO Competition was officially launched during a glittering ceremony that was held at the Sandton Hotel in Johannesburg on Monday. The draws for the prestigious competition were also conducted during the ceremony.
Kaizer Chiefs, who for the first time in the history of the competition missed last year’s event, will host the domestic lads, Black Leopards, in their first fixture. The match will be played at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
Kaizer Chiefs finished the league programme in the ninth spot in the 2002/2003 soccer season, but rose to the occasion and won the league championship last season. Ajax Cape Town, or the Urban Warriors as they are affectionately called, will meet Moroka Swallows at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Ajax were hot contenders for the league championship that was finally won by Kaizer Chiefs last season.
Supersport United, whose focus will be divided between the domestic competition and the CAF Champions League, will face the team that has a similar dilemma, Santos Football Club. Supersport United will be the host, as the match will be played at Securicor Loftus in Pretoria.
Wits University will be up against Orlando Pirates. The match will be played at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.
Mamelodi Sundowns will not be part of the competition. They finished their league programme in the 12th spot last season. The other Limpopo based team, Dynamos Football Club, will also not partake in the rich competition. They narrowly escaped relegation last season, as they ended in the third last position.
