Leopards to play opening match in Durban

The Premier Soccer League announced the fixtures for the 2016/17 soccer season on Monday this week. The opening matches will be played over the weekend of August 27 and 28.

Unlike last season, when Black Leopards commenced their league programme by hosting Milano United at the Thohoyandou Stadium, the Thohoyandou outfit will travel to Durban in their opening match. They will rub shoulders with Amazulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday, 28 August. A look at the history for the two teams shows that Amazulu gave Lidoda Duvha a tough time each time they met.

The University of Pretoria will host Cape Town All Stars at the Tuks Stadium in Pretoria. Amatuks are still trying to acclimatize to life in the National First Division after being relegated from the Absa Premiership last season.

Royal Eagles will host the rookies, King United, in their Kwazulu Natal derby at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg. It will be the first time for the former Black Leopards coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, and his assistant, Mr Joel Masutha, to guide Royal Eagles in a league match after joining the Pietermaritzburg side in a one-year contract two months ago.

Santos will lock horns with Mbombela United at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Mbombela United missed promotion by a whisker last season. Vasco da Gama will be the visitors in their match against Mthatha Bucks at the Mthatha Stadium. The newcomers, Magezi FC, will entertain Thanda Royal Zulu at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Magezi, together with Kings United, were campaigning in the National First Division last season. Jomo Cosmos will enjoy home-ground advantage in their match against FC Cape Town at the Olën Park Stadium in Potchefstroom. Milano United will play against Witbank Spurs at the Blue Downs Stadium in Cape Town.
