The team of Musina Municipality performed extremely well by winning 10 medals during the week-long Southern African Inter-municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games that took place in Mahikeng, North West, last week.
Municipalities from South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Lesotho and Zambia participated during the event.
Lillian Muleya made Musina Municipality proud after winning the 5km road race. She received a gold medal and a trophy during the closing ceremony. “Words alone cannot express how happy I am. I appreciate the love and support that my colleagues showed me throughout the race. I made a promise to myself last year, when taking second position in Lesotho, that 2016 would be a different year for me," she said.
Suzan Mukwa, who captains the tennis team, said she was extremely happy about the team’s achievement. “For the first time in the history of SAIMSA, Musina tennis team managed to take the second position and win silver medals. I’m excited that our hard work and endless training had indeed paid off. Our vision is to win as many medals as possible during future tournaments.”
The mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, said that she was impressed by the level of commitment displayed by all the teams. “This year, the players came out with different techniques and we should all be proud of them. They have all done very well, compared to last year’s games, and this goes a long way to display that we are improving as a municipality.”
