Four teams to compete in Limpopo Soccer Challenge

Sport - Date: 11 July 2008

For the first time in history, all three Limpopo’s National First Division teams will feature in the annual Limpopo Soccer Challenge. The event was officially launched during a ceremony that was held in Polokwane on Monday afternoon.

This will be the third edition of the event and will be staged at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday, July 20. This year’s format will differ from the other provincial competitions in that the three Limpopo First Division teams, Dynamos, Winnerspark and the defending champions, Black Leopards, will fight for a place in the final against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Dynamos will lock horns with Winnerspark at 09:00. The winner in the match will face Black Leopards at 12:00. The winner in that encounter will meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the final, which is scheduled for 15:30. The event is the brainchild of Limpopo Tourism and Parks.

During an interview with the chief operations officer for the Limpopo Tourism and Parks, Ms Seipati Tlaka, she said that the event would help them to promote the province as a leading eco-tourism destination. She revealed that they had put aside an amount of R1 million for the event.

Dynamos boss Pat Malabela said that they were ready for the event and that they would use the competition to gauge their level of readiness for the new season. He said that they would use the competition to console themselves for the 1-2 defeat which they had suffered at the hands of FC AK in their promotional play-off match at the same venue last weekend.

The Leopards’ brand manager, Tshifhiwa Thidiela, praised Limpopo Tourism and Parks for staging the competition, saying that was an indication that they really cared about the financial position of the three teams which are based in the province.
