FC Basel have every reason to celebrate. They were crowned champions of the Vhuthu Mobile Fridge Soccer Tournament at Gondeni Stadium last Sunday. This victory marked the second accolade for Basel within the span of four weeks as they had been crowned champions of the NR Makhadi Soccer Tournament at the same venue just four weeks ago.
In the Vhuthu tournament final, Basel defeated Tshamutilikwa Fire Boys with a score of 1-0 to claim the trophy. Basel’s journey to the final went through Tshianzwane Real Citizens, whom they convincingly defeated 4-0 in the semi-final match at the same venue earlier that day. For their efforts, Basel received a cash prize of R5,000 and a floating trophy during a ceremony at the stadium shortly after the final game.
Tshamutilikwa Fire Boys were awarded a cash prize of R2,500 during the ceremony. Their path to the final was not without its challenges. They managed to overcome Sterkstroom Real Chiefs with a 4-2 victory in the semi-final, a match that went into a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time.
Tshianzwane Real Citizens, who secured the third place, received a cash prize of R1,500. Real Citizens won their losers’ final match by defeating Sterkstroom Real Chiefs 4-3, with the outcome once again determined by a penalty shootout.
Teams that were eliminated in the quarter-final round, including Malamangwa Scorching Winters, Mighty Super Power, Mukoma All Stars, and Classic XI Sports Academy, each received a consolation prize of R250. In total, 32 teams from Gondeni and the surrounding areas participated in the tournament.
